Well hello!
I’m Rob, most of you know me as ‘the guy that has his name under each Intel Pack4DreamHack mailing I get’. I think most of my non-gaming friends go nuts with all the Intel Pack4DreamHack spam I put up on my Facebook Wall, but hey, i’m always so excited to go again!
I can remember my first DreamHack quite vividly. I read about it somewhere on the interwebs: “DreamHack attempts another World Record“. I had to go, I had to be part of a world record and, besides that, I loved going to LAN parties. So I got a friend to join me on my quest and off we went. In my crappy Opel Astra station wagon we loaded our PC’s (they were HUGE back then in 2006) and drove off to Sweden.
The trip was long, and very exhausting. We left around 11:30 in the morning from my hometown, soon driving into Germany for the longest leg of the trip. Back then we didn’t know there was an option to go with a boat for some parts of the trip so we kinda took a detour. It was 0:30 on Thursday when we finally crossed the first of two bridges in Denmark and I was beat. Pulled the car into a gas station and decided to sleep for a bit.
Not thirty minutes later I woke up again and decided I was fit enough to drive, so I drove on. Through Denmark, entering Sweden. By 5:30 I was literally falling asleep behind the wheel (my friend didn’t have his drivers license yet) and suddenly I saw a sign: “Jönköping – 50KM“. Adrenaline filled my body, we were so close! I stopped at another gas station, filled my body with some Red Bull and coffee and said “Let’s do this!”. It was 7 in the morning when we finally saw the Elmia Halls for the first time and, actually, I didn’t sleep for another 18 hours after that. It was an epic experience.
A year after that I wanted to go again, got about 16 people together all willing to chip in about 350 euros to have an amazing weekend. Then Kurt from Intel called my cellphone number and, after about 20 seconds of talking and a cup of coffee at some random shopping mall, Intel Pack4DreamHack was born.
Now, 7 years later, it’s only two days away once more. It’ll be my twelfth DreamHack. So far all the signs point to probably the best edition yet. We have had amazing give aways, added another 1000 Facebook likes and are going strong in every other statistic I can think of. Wildstylez, Darude and Dixz will be performing for us during the weekend and we have an amazing video crew ready to get busy.
I’ve seen DreamHack grow from about 8000 people to the 20000/25000 that come nowadays. I’ve personally seen Hall B grow bigger and I have made so many new friends in the past 7 years. I can’t wait to meet the old faces once again and get to know the new faces that’ll board the bus this Wednesday.
DreamHack is an event i’ll probably be still going to five years from now. It’s epic, it’s amazing, and I am hella excited for it.
